Where to AirBnB in Lisboa

If you’re a traveler who doesn’t enjoy the order and artifice of a hotel or the clutter and clamor of hostels, it’s likely you’ve heard of (or used) AirBnb.

In Lisbon, AirBnB is huge. Almost every neighborhood— from the peaceful, riverside Belém all the way to the sprawling suburbs of Amadora— have AirBnB listings ready to accommodate all kinds of travelers and their specific touristic priorities, but it’s difficult to know what to expect from the various neighborhoods around town if you’re coming to Lisbon for the first time. We’re here to help.

Chiado/Bairro Alto – Bars & Commotion in the Historical Center

Perhaps the most raucous and active neighborhoods in Lisbon are Chiado and Bairro Alto. Therefore, they stand out as the more expensive AirBnB locations in the city. Their proximity to bars— everything from silky jazz clubs to sleek rooftop bars to grimy, dollar sangria dives and a metro station to boot, complete shopping district, and a McDonald’s open until 2 AM (drunk Big Macs), make the neighborhood extremely popular for tourists who are looking to bump through the night and sleep in all day.

Entire apartments in these neighborhoods range from 45 to 60 USD per night. Rooms in shared apartments range between 25 and 35 USD, though we found one for only 9 dollars! (For cheap rooms like that, it is important to READ THE REVIEWS)

Intendente/Anjos/Alameda – Hip Bars and Retro Stores off Almirante Reis

These neighborhoods, grouped by locals as the “linha verde” neighborhoods because of their proximity to one of Lisbon’s four metro lines, are, simply put, the hip and artistic hubs of Lisbon. Rarely mentioned in most travel blogs, these neighborhoods are grittier than the romance and color of historic Lisbon. Here you’ll see more tattoos, more bicycles, find more vintage shops, and receive more flyers for performance art shows and ceramic classes. The area surrounding Alameda is absolutely beautiful, boasting a large park and an enormous fountain where local families gather to catch the sunsets and have ice cream at the park kiosks. These neighborhoods are perfect for travelers who want to see the creative and youthful side of Lisbon, tucked far from its castles and towering medieval monuments.

Entire apartments in these neighborhoods go between 35 and 50 USD. Rooms go between 15 and 35 USD. If you end up in the neighborhoods, we recommend the tasty Brick Café and the cozy and flamboyant Casa Independente.

Marques de Pombal & Avenida da Liberdade – High-End Shopping and Parque Eduardo VII

Simply put, this is the swankiest modern neighborhood in central Lisbon (excluding the ultra-modern, but far-away Parque das Naçoes). Featuring dozens of high-end fashion and jewelry stores, a gorgeous, tree-lined main avenue, and a carefully kept 26-hectare park, this is the dream neighborhood for travelers who have never been on a budget and intend to blow whatever they can on whatever they find. These neighborhoods are walking distance from El Corte Inglês, Lisbon’s seven-story high-end mall, and the Gulbenkian Museum which features a broad and majestic collection of both modern and contemporary art. Next to the Museum is the best burger place in Lisbon, Ground Burger.

Entire apartments in these neighborhoods go between 45 and 75 USD a night. Rooms go between 25 and 45 USD.

Whatever neighborhood you choose, be sure to thoroughly research the lodgings that fit your budget. There’s no shortage of short-term rentals around the city (to the chagrin of the locals in fact), so it’s important to get exactly what you’re sold. You shouldn’t have to settle for less.
