Tucked into a quiet corner of Belém where you’d least expect to find one of Lisbon’s buzziest kitchens, Canalha brings the neighborhood tasca into the 21st century—with a wink and a wine list.

Canalha may look humble from the street, but there’s nothing timid about what’s happening on the plate. Think bistro bones with Lisbon blood: local, seasonal ingredients take center stage, and every dish is meant to be savored and shared.

Grab a seat at the counter to watch the magic unfold in the open kitchen or snag a table (if you’re lucky) for a bit more elbow room. The energy is casual but intentional, with service that’s both sharp and sincerely welcoming.

Highlights? The squid with trout roe in a silky sheep’s butter cream sauce was absurdly good — rich, oceanic, and delicately balanced. The pork loin, tender as filet mignon, arrived perfectly cooked and needed nothing more than your undivided attention. And the doce de bolacha with pistachio ice cream? Sounds like a pandemic pantry experiment, but trust the process, especially when paired with a chilled white madeira. Holy bananas.

Prices are refreshingly reasonable for a place flirting with Michelin’s more serious affections. The menu may change, but we hope the philosophy doesn’t: good food, good vibes, no fuss.

Canalha might mean “scoundrel” in Portuguese, but this place is all heart.
