Carnal is the kind of restaurant that laughs politely at your “we’ll just order a couple of things” plan and then watches you abandon it entirely. Along the main thoroughfare in Bairro Alto, this is Mexican food done with zero interest in pandering to Lisbon’s ongoing Tex-Mex phase. Order the tostada vieiras immediately: seared scallops, chimichurri, and a proper homemade corn tortilla that reminds you tortillas are not supposed to be an afterthought. The suckling pig carnitas are rich without being heavy, the taco suadero is a traditional triumph, and the margaritas — served in chilled terracotta cups — are dangerous in the best possible way.
Everything tastes deeply authentic but not stuck in the past: traditional sauces, precise cooking, and just enough of a twist to keep things interesting without shouting about it. Service is refreshingly intuitive — make eye contact and someone appears. Add in striking art, a thoughtful drink list, and a welcoming and creative atmosphere, and you’ve got something special.
Carnal doesn’t try to impress you. It simply feeds you extremely well until you admit defeat and order one more dish.
