There are several Angolan restaurants around town, but this one is the leader of the pack. Casa de Angola is an authentic African restaurant inside a building used also for artist residencies. Vibrantly painted and welcoming, this nook in Rato doesn’t disappoint. Try their traditional shrimp moamba or, if you aren’t sure that’s for you, go with recommendations from the friendly staff. There are always dishes of the day and freshly-made specials listed on the chalkboard outside. Their 6€ lunch menu is popular with locals, so at times getting a table is a challenge — getting there early is a good idea. Try an Angolan beer with your meal, or choose from a list of local Portuguese wines and you’ll be a happy camper. Take a glance at one of the Angolan newspapers lying around or go read some original poetry scribbled on the tiles near the bathroom between dishes, or just chat with the friendly owner who can guide you through the recipes and preparation methods if you want to try it at home.
