Lisbon Events Calendar

Logistics for planning things to do for an excellent day (or week, or month) in and around Lisbon, in English. ATTENTION: Most of the top museums in Lisbon have closed due to the attempt to contain the Coronavirus. There will likely be last-minute cancellations on events until mid-May and possibly beyond, so for now, it’s best to call and check if the event you fancy is still going on just in case.

The Gublenkian Museum is a Lisbon staple that, like most Lisbon staples of the museum variety, has been hit quite hard by the global pandemic. And yet, it has some good news.
We’ll let them do the talking:
“In a year in which the Gulbenkian Garden is, more than ever, a place of freedom, and in a time marked by challenges to artistic enjoyment, the Summer Garden presents a transdisciplinary and truly eclectic program, in charge of the ZDB (Gallery Zé dos Bois).

Designed to “safeguard an inclusive space, maintaining a particular attention to individual enjoyment”, the program starts from the qualities of the Garden to explore various paths that go through installation, performance, and music.

For the next three weekends, the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum has free admission.”

Weekly | MARKET | Craft & Design | Estrela | FREE @ Jardim da Estrela | Lisboa | Lisboa | Portugal

This is probably the most relaxed craft market in town, thanks to its position in the tranquil and beautifully cared-for Jardim da Estrela. It’s also surprisingly diverse and offers more than your average home-made soaps and ankle bracelets. We can’t guarantee she’ll be there every time, but we once saw a woman here selling one-of-a-kind, perfectly creepy oversized papier-mâché dolls, for example.

The first weekend of every month, except January.

Jul 4 @ 14:00 – 21:00
to July 5 | ART EXHIBIT | Afonso Matias: Kindergarten | Xabregas | FREE @ Arroz Estudios | Lisboa | Lisboa | Portugal

Art shows are slowly coming back to Lisbon, and one such art show is being hosted by Arroz Éstudios starting this Saturday. It’s by local Afonoso Matias, and it’s called KINDERGARTEN. Afonso has recently been using iron plate as a medium, and here’s Afonso’s very detailed account of the fun to be had at KINDERGARTEN:

“-Visually, the interest is in exploring vibrant chromatic tonalities arising from a clear existence of possible games between the light and the shadows emitted by certain elements. Thus, the compositional dimension takes on a structuring and cross-sectional feature in all of the pieces.
-Procedurally, it is important to mention that the use of a digital pen in Photoshop has enabled the possibility of exploring the notion of image construction from layers.

– Technically, the grinder has acquired key importance in the constructive process, despite the prevailing importance of the brush and acrylic paint.

– Conceptually, the boundaries between what is real and what is abstract are frequently explored, existing an open tension between real references (of photographic origin) and the works produced manually.

– On a thematic level, the focus is mainly on playgrounds, due to their urban design structures, where the compositions and tensions among the lines intrigue me. Another major source of inspiration lies in a recent experience with the various abandoned materials found in municipal yards, junkyards or recycling centers.”

*Arroz Éstudios is still aware of the rona, and so it will be following all necessary guidelines, and will have limited capacity.

Eating at McDonald’s does not make you a bad person. Your ancestors have done it for generations, and you can always opt for just lettuce. But sometimes you just want something a little more natural and less controversial, if only to avoid those awkward dinner-party conversations.

MARKET | Antiques | Estrela | FREE
Jul 18 @ 09:00 – 18:00
MARKET | Antiques | Estrela | FREE @ Jardim da Estrela

Antiques of all kinds, some crafts and artisanal goods, both edible and wearable, all in a get-away-from-it-all setting.

Everyone’s selling antiques in Lisbon these days, and the market held in Jardim da Estrela every third Saturday carries much the same as many others: old brass handles, pieces of chandeliers, those African statuettes that no one wants, and the occasional treasure. Like most antique markets, this one also has a decent selection of artisanal jewelry and some food. What makes it special is the setting: this quiet park in a residential area of the city is a far cry from the hustle and bustle of Feira da Ladra or anything in the center. There’s a cafe right next to it if you need some liquid courage.

CANCELLED | WEEKLY | FARMER'S MARKET | "LX Rural" at LX Factory | Alcantara | FREE @ LX Factory | Lisboa | Lisboa | Portugal

Eating at McDonald’s does not make you a bad person. Your ancestors have done it for generations, and you can always opt for just lettuce. But sometimes you just want something a little more natural and less controversial, if only to avoid those awkward dinner-party conversations.
In comes LX Rural, the new farmer’s market brought to you by LX Factory, the hippest (or freshest?) mini-Brooklyn this side of the Atlantic.
Here’s what they tell us:
“From the countryside to the city, from generation to generation, a rare market emerges. A market of freshness, quality and value.
Wake up early on Sunday and bring the family to the Rural Lx!
Come and meet the producers of traditional, sustainable and biological agriculture. Savor the products of the time. Come and taste the homemade bread, the preserves, the fresh vegetables, the sausages (thank Jesus!), the honey … and take the tradition and art to your table!
Indulge yourself in this market of colors and flavors of the field!”
The market is open to producers from all over Portugal, and is sure to make your Sunday hangover, if not better, healthier.

The organizers add:
“NOS Primavera Sound, the festival’s Portuguese counterpart, takes place in Porto one week after Primavera Sound Barcelona. Artists such as Kendrick Lamar, Sigur Rós, Patti Smith, Blur, Daniel Johnston, Rosalía, A$AP Rocky, and Lorde, among others, have already performed in the Parque de Cidade site in the Portuguese city.”

This year, due to you know what, the festival has been rescheduled to kick off September 3d.

Weekly | MARKET | Craft & Design | Estrela | FREE
Sep 5 @ 10:00 – 19:00

Monthly | MARKET | Feira do Intendente | Intendente | FREE

Monthly | MARKET | Feira do Intendente | Intendente | FREE @ Largo Intendente | Lisboa | Lisboa | Portugal

While Feira da Ladra (“Thieves market”) continues to be Lisbon’s number one second-hand market, that doesn’t mean it’s the ONLY market in town worth its weight in used stuff. You can find some nice hidden gems at Lisbon’s second-best second-hand market, at Feira Intendente, every other Sunday all year round.

NOTE: one of the best ways to practice your Portuguese is by talking vendors down from 5€ to 1€.

MARKET | Antiques | Estrela | FREE
