to Dec 15 | ART EXHIBIT | Are you a Tourist? | Belém | 6€ @ Padrão dos Descobrimentos | Lisboa | Lisboa | Portugal

Are you a tourist?
No, seriously.
Are rent and petty theft going up because of you?
When you walk around Lisbon and see the increasing “Tourists F.ck Off” graffiti and stickers, do you ask yourself, “Do they mean me?”
Or maybe you even utter that same sentiment from time to time in an attempt to, you know, blend in?
After all, tourism is a state of mind…

Anyway, Padrão dos Descobrimentos invites you to ask these and other tough questions in their new show… inside popular tourist destination Belém.
Here’s what they say:
“What is a tourist? Can we all be tourists? Is a tourist always a tourist? What was tourism like in the time of our grandparents? Can we be tourists in the cities we live in?
The exhibition invites us to look at tourists and their activities, but also to migrants and locals, paying special attention to our daily or occasional encounters, showing that we all can learn from one another. For that, we need only to see each other as inhabitants of the same world, although we look at it through different perspectives and with different expectations.”

Are you a tourist…?

Daily: 10h-19h.

ENTRY: 6€ (for tourists and locals).

“No border should be more worthy of protection than a human life.”

That’s just one of the many mottos of HuBB – Humans Before Borders, a non-profit organization dedicated to the fight against the inhumane and illegal treatment of migrants and refugees.

This week, in honor of World Children’s Day, HuBB and Galeria Monumental present a photo exhibit by some youngsters who are probably not doing as well as you.

Here’s what they say about it:
“Since August 2019 there has been an enormous raise of migrants and refugees arrivals on Greek Islands (mainly Lesvos, Chios, and Samos).
Consequently, living conditions in the camps are getting worse every day, with increase in the tensions among the population.

The photography project “Through Our Eyes” shows the daily lives of asylum seekers living in the ‘hotspot’ camp on Samos Island, Greece, through their own eyes. Behind the camera, instead of reporters or journalists, we find teenage boys and girls who have been living in this camp for months.

The young photographers are students at the Mazi youth center, run by the NGO Still I Rise. Founded in June 2018 by Nicolò Govoni, Giulia Cicoli and Sarah Ruzek, Mazì provides informal education and psychosocial support for children aged 12 to 17 living in the camp.

The photos show us the daily reality and the emotional struggles of children trapped at the edge of Europe, at the mercy of geopolitical wranglings that take no account of their need to survive, to learn, to flourish, and grow.

During the week of the exhibition, Galeria Monumental will host talks, performances, and gatherings around this topic. We will be raising funds to support Still I Rise and their education program for children.”

FREE ENTRY (but, again, donations are welcome… for the kids).

Weekly | WORKSHOP | DIY-day at Disgraça | Graça | FREE @ Disgraça | Lisboa | Lisboa | Portugal

DIY has become a vague term in recent years. After all, we’re all in it together, right? Moreover, big business is all about buzzwords…
Nevertheless, with minimum wage persistently low and rent increasingly high, the times are riper than ever for some good old-fashioned do-it-yourself fun.
Disgraça, one of Lisbon’s best little-known venues for, among other things, light vegan dinners and heavy punk rock shows, is a pretty good definition of DIY (read their story here). That’s why every Wednesday they are hosting “DIY-day.” We’ll let them do the rest:
“We bring two really good things together – creating stuff AND hanging out with nice people.
Drop in any Wednesday from 18h!
Bring your own material!
NO DINNER but the bar is open and we will also provide some snacks.
To begin with, we will just learn from each other and so on, but in the future, there may be some workshops… bring your ideas!”

FREE ENTRY.

Weekly | WORKSHOP | DIY-day at Disgraça | Graça | FREE
Dec 11 @ 18:00 – 22:00

FREE ENTRY.
