to Aug 11 | ART EXHIBIT | Albrecht Dürer: St. Jerome Drawings from the Albertina Museum | Santos | 6 - 10€ @ Museu Nacional de Atre Antiga | Lisboa | Lisboa | Portugal

Albrecht Dürer was a German painter mostly working around 500 years ago. He made many paintings which, in turn, made history in the world of art.

One such painting is “Saint Jerome in His Study.”
Albrecht completed said piece in 1521. Then, while on a trip to Antwerp, he gave it to the secretary of a Portuguese factory as a gift. And so today, St Jerome hangs in the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga right here in Lisbon, continuing to make history.

However, Albrecht had also made four preliminary drawings for St. Jerome, which somehow ended up in the Albertina Museum in Vienna.
That is, until recently.

For the next two months, said drawings are in Portugal for the first time, face to face with the iconic final work for which they served as inspiration.
Thus, you are invited to witness art history in the making, as well as to an up-close and personal study of Albrecht’s creative process.

ENTRY: 6-10€.

Jul 24 @ 10:00 – 19:00
to Oct 27 | ART EXHIBIT | Banksy: Genius or Vandal? | Belém | 6 - 32€ @ Cordoaria Nacional | Lisboa | Lisboa | Portugal

“Some people become cops because they want to make the world a better place. Some people become vandals because they want to make the world a better-looking place.”
Banksy.

Well, the elusive Brit that is Banksy has definitely made the world better-looking. So that answers that question.
Then again, no one says that being a vandal and being a genius are mutually exclusive. For the next few months, the centuries-old former naval rope-making factory-turned exhibition center that is Cordoaria Nacional invites you to view some of the mysterious bad boy’s pieces out of their natural habitat. Over 70 works, including original pieces, sculptures, art installations, video, and photography.
Here’s what they add (those vandals):
“This exhibition, like all previous shows of Banksy’s work, is not authorized by the artist, who seeks to protect his anonymity and independence from the system.”

Opening Hours:
Sun to Fri – 10h-19h.
Saturdays- 10h-20h.
(Final entry one hour before closing).

Jul 24 @ 10:00 – 18:00
to Sept 29 | PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT | The Portuguese Prison Photo Project | Alfama | 3€ @ Museu do Ajube | Lisboa | Lisboa | Portugal

If you’ve never seen the inside of a prison, then chances are you’re not in the U.S., let alone doing better than a lot of the planet.
Museu do Ajube aims to change that — but, don’t worry, not permanently, and for a mere three bucks.
Here’s their verdict:
“The Portuguese Prison Photo Project provides an insight into seven contemporary Portuguese prisons. From the largest and oldest, dating back to the 1880s, to the newest, opened in 2004.
The images, captured by two photographers — Portuguese Luís Barbosa and Swiss Peter M. Schulthess — show different approaches and perspectives, and are complemented by historical images from the national archives.”

Weekend hours: 11h – 19h
FREE ENTRANCE on July 25 (Pavilhão do Conhecimento’s Birthday)

From the organizers:
They live in our homes and streets, in our imagination and even in the music we listen to. And have been with us for thousands of years. But what do we actually know about them? How did they become so different from wild animals? How do they see, listen and feel the world?

The new temporary exhibition of Pavilion of Knowledge invites children and grown-ups to explore the world of their favorite pets. The exhibition is composed by three thematic areas: (“In their skin”; “In their head”; “In our societies”) adding a total of 47 interactive exhibits.

Produced by Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie – from Paris – will be open to the public until September 8, 2019. On the first Sunday of every month, the public is welcome to visit our science center with a dog and also to participate in our workshop programme Canine Passport. But we’re not stopping there: Feline Instinct workshop happens every second Sunday of the month and is dedicated to cats.

Are you ready to enter the amazing world of your favorite pets?

to July 27 | CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL | Festival do Estoril Lisboa | Lisbon to Cascais | FREE to 12€ @ CENTRO CULTURAL CASCAIS | Cascais | Lisboa | Portugal

The Estoril Coast Music Festival was founded in 1975.
Almost a classic at this point, really, and it’s still kicking.
Here’s how it describes itself:
“Intimately linked to a pedagogical function, it fits the most varied forms of artistic expression of musical roots. In this perspective, the presence of Portuguese ballet, traditional music, chamber music, symphonic music, choruses, jazz, and theater are themes that the Festival has developed throughout its history as an essential action for the formation of the young musicians of today and the appetite of a heterogeneous public.”

Whether you’re a member of the heterogeneous public or simply enjoy your music classical, the 45th edition of the month-long festival is full of premiers and live renditions of some of the country’s, and the world’s, finest tunes.

Here are some highlights, with a full list below:

Jul 25 @ 12:00 – 18:00
to July 28 | ART EXHIBIT | "Oil Room" by Per Barclay | Martim Moniz | 2€ @ Carpintarias de São Lázaro | Lisboa | Lisboa | Portugal

Per Barclay is responsible for the image on the left. Born in Norway and living and working in Italy, Per is a multimedia installation artist who likes to play with spaces. And oil. Lots of oil. Lisbon gallery San Lázaro Carpintarias is the latest space Per has reinterpreted using dead dinosaurs. Here’s what they have to say about it:
“‘Oil Room’ creates the coexistence of reality and its image reflected in the same place, where, despite the demarcation that separates the two, the perception oscillates, and it is difficult to determine if what is seen at the moment is the liquid or the solid, projection or reality. Initially, Per Barclay’s facilities were built with the intention of being photographed and the photographs themselves becoming the final work, but the impact of the installation is so striking that it has been gaining a life of its own over time, becoming an independent work.”

The installation has already transformed some high-profile places in Italy, France, and Spain, and Portugal is its next stop.

Opening: Thursday, May 16, 19h.
Gallery hours: Thursday-Sunday, 12h to 18h.
Show up until July 28.

to July 28 | ART EXHIBIT | "Oil Room" by Per Barclay | Martim Moniz | 2€ @ Carpintarias de São Lázaro | Lisboa | Lisboa | Portugal

The installation has already transformed some high-profile places in Italy, France, and Spain, and Portugal is its next stop.

to July 27 | CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL | Festival do Estoril Lisboa | Lisbon to Cascais | FREE to 12€ @ CENTRO CULTURAL CASCAIS | Cascais | Lisboa | Portugal

Here are some highlights, with a full list below:

to Aug 11 | ART EXHIBIT | Albrecht Dürer: St.
