Lisbon Events Calendar

Logistics for planning things to do for an excellent day (or week, or month) in and around Lisbon, in English. ATTENTION: Most of the top museums in Lisbon have closed due to the attempt to contain the Coronavirus. There will likely be last-minute cancellations on events until mid-May and possibly beyond, so for now, it’s best to call and check if the event you fancy is still going on just in case.

Weekly | MARKET | Craft & Design | Estrela | FREE @ Jardim da Estrela | Lisboa | Lisboa | Portugal

This is probably the most relaxed craft market in town, thanks to its position in the tranquil and beautifully cared-for Jardim da Estrela. It’s also surprisingly diverse and offers more than your average home-made soaps and ankle bracelets. We can’t guarantee she’ll be there every time, but we once saw a woman here selling one-of-a-kind, perfectly creepy oversized papier-mâché dolls, for example.

The first weekend of every month, except January.

Coronavirus has not been good to the world at large, and that especially includes the art world. That’s just the sad truth. But, as Nietzsche once pointed out, we have art in order to not die of the truth. And while full-blown art exhibits are still a major no-no here in Lisbon because people might actually die of art, certain survivor locals of the artistic variety, in a leap of faith, are starting to emerge from the wreckage.

Here’s what new gallery space NO-NO (formerly ACERVO), organizers of Leap of Faith, tell us:
“This past February 14th was the last day of activity of ACERVO in its original facilities. It is with great pleasure that we announce a new date for the opening of NO·NO in our new space at Rua de Santo António à Estrela 39A.
We will launch this new cycle with the group show LEAP OF FAITH (curated by Miguel Mesquita), with works by Ana Pérez-Quiroga, Ana Rebordão, Carlos Arteiro, Carlos Mensil, Catarina Real, Diogo Bolota, Filipe Cortez, Gema Rupérez, Januário Jano, Magda Delgado, Mariana Caló + Francisco Queimadela, Pedro Pascoinho, and Pablo Barreiro.

Last-minute details for the opening will be on our new website, which we will also launch on the 25th.

*In accordance with the recommendations of the DGS (General Health Direction) for the gradual resumption of activity in cultural spaces, the gallery has defined an internal manual of procedures and a small set of safety rules that we ask you to observe for the good of all:
· mandatory use of face mask inside the gallery;
· hand disinfection at the entrance with disinfectant gel provided by the gallery;
· for security reasons it will not be possible to use the gallery’s bathroom ;
· the number of people inside the gallery will be limited to 4, gallery staff included.

**In order to ensure this last point while avoiding uncomfortable situations in which we cannot receive someone, visits to the gallery will depend on prior booking. Until the current state of exception is lifted, the gallery will operate at the following work hours :
May 25 : 11 am – 1 pm / 2 pm – 7 pm
(by appointment by mail to [email protected] until May 24)

(also by appointment. however, all you need is to contact us by phone up to 30 minutes in advance: +351 91 363 90 28)

MARKET | Antiques | Estrela | FREE @ Jardim da Estrela

Antiques of all kinds, some crafts and artisanal goods, both edible and wearable, all in a get-away-from-it-all setting.

Everyone’s selling antiques in Lisbon these days, and the market held in Jardim da Estrela every third Saturday carries much the same as many others: old brass handles, pieces of chandeliers, those African statuettes that no one wants, and the occasional treasure. Like most antique markets, this one also has a decent selection of artisanal jewelry and some food. What makes it special is the setting: this quiet park in a residential area of the city is a far cry from the hustle and bustle of Feira da Ladra or anything in the center. There’s a cafe right next to it if you need some liquid courage.

· hand disinfection at the entrance with disinfectant gel provided by the gallery;
· for security reasons it will not be possible to use the gallery’s bathroom ;

Coronavirus has not been good to the world at large, and that especially includes the art world. That’s just the sad truth. But, as Nietzsche once pointed out, we have art in order to not die of the truth. And while full-blown art exhibits are still a major no-no here in Lisbon because people might actually die of art, certain survivor locals of the artistic variety, in a leap of faith, are starting to emerge from the wreckage.
