Lisbon Events Calendar

Logistics for planning things to do for an excellent day (or week, or month) in and around Lisbon, in English. ATTENTION: Most of the top museums in Lisbon have closed due to the attempt to contain the Coronavirus. There will likely be last-minute cancellations on events until mid-May and possibly beyond, so for now, it’s best to call and check if the event you fancy is still going on just in case.

Music is life.
Everybody knows that.
But whenever the proverbial sh.t hits the proverbial fan, it seems that toilet paper becomes life. So musicians get hit pretty hard. And the fans get hit too…

If you are a fan of music and have enough toilet paper, “online music magazine curated by musicholics” Where The Music Meets has a nifty alternative for going to a live gig. They call it At Your Home, and here’s what they say:

“Due to this situation, many musicians and music promoters are struggling to make their living. The amount of canceled shows and festivals drains life from the music industry but also from live music consumers.

Where the Music Meets launches At Your Home platform in an attempt to give some love back to the musicians and at the same time helping to fight the cause. Every day we will broadcast live music shows recorded directly from musicians houses. No matter the technology. No matter the production. No matter the genre. No matter the projection of each act. We are all in this together.

Donations will be accepted during the shows and directed to the artists themselves. Also, a portion of those donations will be given to Project Open Air, to help in the matter of working on medical devices battling the COVID-19 virus (such as open-source ventilators), in orfer to have a fast and easy solution that can be reproduced and assembled locally worldwide.

Shows will happen every day until we get out of this situation.”

ONLINE JAMS | Lisbon Irish Session Under Quarantine | FREE

In olden times, on any given boring Monday night, you could find a bunch of talented locals churning out some traditional Irish tunes at O’Gilin’s, our favorite (and the oldest) Irish pub in Lisbon.

Oh, how times have changed. O’Gilin’s has shut its doors indefinitely in the name of hygiene and peace. St. Patrick’s day 2020 in Lisbon was basically cancelled. And “the best pint of Guinness in town” has become but a sweet memory…

Luckily though, the lads and lassies behind Lisbon Irish Session won’t let a global pandemic keep them down. For the last few Mondays, they have been using their modern technology, violins, guitars, flutes, a bit of Irish luck, and the sheer power of will to keep the music alive.

Check out their Facebook page and Youtube channel to hear some defiance, Irish style. Updated roughly every Monday night, as per tradition.

to July 19 | ART, MUSIC, WORKSHOPS | Jardim de Verão Gulbenkian 2020 | Praça de Espanha | FREE @ Gulbenkian Museum | Lisboa | Lisboa | Portugal

The Gublenkian Museum is a Lisbon staple that, like most Lisbon staples of the museum variety, has been hit quite hard by the global pandemic. And yet, it has some good news.
We’ll let them do the talking:
“In a year in which the Gulbenkian Garden is, more than ever, a place of freedom, and in a time marked by challenges to artistic enjoyment, the Summer Garden presents a transdisciplinary and truly eclectic program, in charge of the ZDB (Gallery Zé dos Bois).

Designed to “safeguard an inclusive space, maintaining a particular attention to individual enjoyment”, the program starts from the qualities of the Garden to explore various paths that go through installation, performance, and music.

For the next three weekends, the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum has free admission.”

Hennessy’s is a longtime friend of Atlas because of the people behind it, as well as it being a great place to eat, drink, and be merry, Irish style. So we were relieved to learn that it is still standing in the wake of you know what. Now that its doors have reopened to the public, here’s what they say about Wednesday nights:
“If you have a talent the OPEN MIC is the right time and place to show it. Come have fun every Wednesday night and meet our local artists.”

Well, to be fair, even if you don’t have talent, the OPEN MIC — Hennessy’s or elsewhere — is still the right time and place to show it.

WEEKLY | LIVE MUSIC | Hennessy's Open Mic | Cais do Sodré | FREE @ Hennessy's Irish Pub | Lisboa | Lisboa | Portugal
