Gentrification is killing this town. Thousands of residents, including some of Atlas‘ own staff, have been and are being displaced due to booming rent and increasingly sketchy housing situations. And, even though some believe this bubble has to burst eventually, things only seem to be getting worse.
Left Hand Rotation, a local artists’ collective, made a depressing little documentary that sheds some light on the darker sides of your morning latte. It’s called O que vai acontecer aqui? (“What’s going to happen here?”). It premiers at Casa da Achada on Thursday night, at 21h30, free of charge.
Before the premiere, however, you are invited to see the horrors of gentrification firsthand in a tour of its latest wreckage sites: Mouraria, Graça, and Alfama.
It’s aptly titled Gentrificatour, and starts at 18h in Alfama, weaving its way up and down people’s former and soon-to-be-former homes, ending up in Mouraria for the premier at 21h30.
FREE ENTRY (to both tour and movie).
