Lisbon is changing. Walk through its streets for more than a minute and you will come across some construction and discarded memories. What this is doing to the Lisbon community is, at the least, questionable. What the future of Lisbon holds is also questionable and difficult to predict.
The Expanded Eye project was formed by London couple Jade Tomlinson and Kevin James. Here’s what the organizers of their new show, “No future without memory,” tell us:
“(The show is) the result of a three-month artistic residency, and an intense investigation into the memory and identity of a given society at a given time.
Impressed by the number of old artifacts discarded in the numerous renovations taking place in the city, the couple quickly found a relevant starting point for their research on the accelerated growth process of an urban ecosystem.
By deciding to use only abandoned materials from the city’s corners, Jade and Kevin embarked on the simultaneous challenge of preserving these physical fragments of memory and provoking a deeper discussion of sustainability, waste, overconsumption, gentrification, uniformity, and loss of cultural identity.”
If you’re tired of collective memory and cultural identity being stifled left and right, this one might be for you.
