CONCERT | Lopes-Graça Quartet: A Man In A Room, Gambling | 7€

July 10 @ 19:00 - 20:00

€7

Here’s some gambling, musical, and sculptural history for ya courtesy of the organizers of this Saturday’s string-quartet performance:
“In the early 1990s, Gavin Bryars challenged visual artist Juan Muñoz to collaborate on a series of pieces for radio. The idea of creating a work with a sculptor for an exclusively sonic medium triggered a number of stimulating conversations about the invisibility of the project and the potential of the listeners’ imagination in the face of something immaterial connected to the description of actions. They created ten pieces of exactly five minutes each, in which they describe manipulations of playing cards, with Muñoz narrating excerpts from the book The expert at the card table – a kind of essential guide for illusionists and con artists since its first publication in 1902 – while Bryars creates a sinuous soundtrack that sensually embraces the words, silences, and technical instructions in the Spanish artist’s voice, idealizing, in his description, an ‘imaginary space’ for the nocturnal listener, full of mirror games and illusions that sustain an unrealistic magic.

After having had the work performed during the Invisible Exhibition, we bring back the original version, composed only for string quartet, where the Lopes-Graça Quartet and the voice of Juan Munõz will give life and matter to one of the rare concert presentations of this piece.”

Go forth, ye nocturnal listeners, to the imaginary space of unrealistic magic, and be amazed.
