“The modern Aloha (or “Hawaiian”) shirt was devised in the early 1930s by Chinese merchant Ellery Chun of King-Smith Clothiers and Dry Goods, a store in Waikiki. The first advertisement was published on June 28, 1935. Local residents, especially surfers and tourists, descended on Chun’s store and bought every shirt he had. Within years, major designer labels sprung up all over Hawaii and began manufacturing and selling Aloha shirts en masse…
After World War II, many servicemen and servicewomen returned to the United States from Asia and the Pacific islands with aloha shirts made in Hawaii.”

Then, Tony Montana happened. And then Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (the movie) happened.
Which brings us to today. What was once viewed as the least cool thing at a party has become the staple of a whole new level of woke. Admit it, you own (or have thought about owning) at least one of those shirts.
Enter Crafty Corner, our favorite craft beer watering hole this side of the Atlantic.
Here’s what they say:
“Summer is here, and there’s a Hawaiian party at Crafty Corner. There will be prizes for those who dress best, so come dressed for the occasion.
Bring your inflatable flamingos, because Cais do Sodré will be a pool of good beer! And with music to match.”

Said party gets even crazier with the launch of Tartu Express, a 5.3% India Pale Lager made with pineapple and coconut — the brainchild of Dois Corvos in collaboration with the Pühaste Brewery — and, in our humble opinion, the beer equivalent of an Aloha shirt.
But hey — don’t knock it ’til you try it!
