Based on Giuseppe’s novel, Il Gattopardo, director Luchino Visconti’s The Leopard (1963) is considered one of the best adaptations from the page to the screen of all time.

Set in the 1960s, the film chronicles the demise of an aristocratic Sicilian family. Prince Don Fabrizio, played by Burt Lancaster, tries at all costs to preserve the status of his family in the social hierarchy as the revolution gains momentum. He encourages a marriage between his nephew and a woman of high social standing while the rise of the uneducated bourgeoisie turns the tables. The Leopard gives us a nostalgic look at this man, imprisoned between obsolescence and deep decline.
