Marques de Pombal.
It’s not only a metro station. It’s not only that roundabout that most drivers and pedestrians don’t love, in the center of downtown Lisbon, with that statue of a dude with a lion in the middle of it. Sebastio José (aka Marques de Pombal, aka that dude with the lion) was also a person, and a pretty important one at that. Born in 1699, he was at times a lawyer, a military man, a diplomat, and, eventually, among other things, helped Lisbon recover from the earthquake of 1755 epidemic-free.
To thank him, CODEX: The Keys to History invite you to the Livraria ler Davagar bookstore to find out more about the man who played an integral part in the development of modern Lisbon, and history itself.
