OUTDOOR CLASSICAL CONCERT | Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana” | Chiado | FREE
July 6, 2018 @ 21:30 - 22:30FREE
The summer series of free concerts in Largo de São Carlos is back! To kick it off, our favorite Portuguese conductor, Joana Carneiro, will lead Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, with the vocal help of Coro do Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and Coro Juvenil de Lisboa, to bring to life Carl Orff’s dramatic Carmina Burana. What better way to rock out to classical than with this tune:
From the organizers:
Premiered at the Frankfurt Opera on 8 June 1937, the scenic cantata Carmina Burana is part of the Carl Orff (1895-1982) trilogy that includes Catulli Carmina and Trionfo di Afrodite. Inspired by 24 poems written in medieval Latin, the piece speaks of the fickleness of wealth, the pleasures of drinking, gambling, and the joy of the return of Spring. Soon after its premiere, Carmina Burana became a very popular piece. It begins and ends with O Fortuna, an instantly recognized theme all over the world.
