OUTDOOR CLASSICAL CONCERT | The Russians: Rimski-Korsakov, Prokofiev, Mussorgski et al | Chiado | FREE

July 20, 2018 @ 21:30 - 23:30

Free

Russians aren’t just great at football (remember Russia beating Spain to the quarterfinals in the World Cup two weeks ago?), they also make some most excellent composers. A lot of them. Here’s your chance to hear a few, for free, under the musical direction of Emil Kabakov, with Joana Carneiro conducting the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa. This one’s not to be missed.

From the organizers:

Russian music went through a long historical period that began with folk and ritual songs and sacred music. It was during the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century that illustrious Russian composers emerged, artists whose concert and operatic works justly received worldwide attention. This night of Russian music will bring us excerpts of some popular operas composed by names of the very first order such as Glinka (1804-1857) and his opera Ruslan and Ludmila, Prince Igor by Borodine (1833-1887), Boris Godunov by Mussorgski (1839-1881) or Eugene Oneguin by Tchaikovsky (1840-1893). Prokofiev will be represented by excerpts of two of his operas: The Love for Three Oranges and War and Peace, both composed at the beginning of the 20th century. The Concert for Violin in A minor op.82 was written by Alexander Glazunov (1865-1946) in 1904 and was dedicated to the distinguished violinist Leopold Auer, who premiered it in St. Petersburg in 1905. With no pauses or numbered sections, the concert demands an outstanding technique that is representative of Glazunov’s brilliant style.
