Amália Rodrigues, aka “The Queen of Fado,” is one of the few people in Lisbon with countless streets, a museum, and a garden bearing her name. And with good reason: born a century ago, Amália, at one time or another, was a seamstress, worked at a chocolate factory, sold fruit on the streets, sang songs, starred in movies, traveled the world, and almost single-handedly brought fado music to the world stage. She’s also the best-selling Portuguese artist in history.
For three Saturdays in August, three local fado musicians (that would probably be doing something else if it weren’t for The Queen) want to pay tribute and share some fado with you, in the garden of the house where Amália lived for over 40 years.
Ana Sofia Varela, João Filipe, and Pedro Amendoeira will be saudading your lockdown blues away August 8th, 22d, and 29th, starting at 17h30.
