Bernardo Bertolucci. You may have heard of him. He was Italian, but has famously said that French was the official language of cinema. So, he was controversial. His classic Last Tango in Paris, in fact, was banned in many a theater for being too controversial. Overall, he is considered to be one of the greatest filmmakers of the previous century.
