Capital cities have been in the news a lot lately. But enough about that. The UCCLA, aka the
Union of Portuguese-speaking Capital Cities, partners with the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon to bring you the exhibition ‘Urbanisms of Portuguese Influence,’ and here’s what they say about that:
“Understanding our cities and the models that influenced their development are the ingredients of this exhibition. It is a sample of some of the Urbanization Plans that were prepared between 1934 (date of the 1st Portuguese Decree-Law to define the rules of these plans) and 1974 (date from which the colonies became independent), for the cities of Africa and Asia that, at that time, were under Portuguese colonial administration – plans that were collected and studied in the scope of a research project of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon.”
And Secretary-General of the UCCLA, Vitor Ramalho, adds this:
“It is very useful and profitable for us to revisit history and understand, as far as Portugal is concerned, the influence of the general urbanization plans and the underlying concepts, naturally including the territories of maritime expansion. ‘Urbanisms of Portuguese influence’ is a testimony of a part of who we are, of our specificity, of the important contribution of Portuguese architecture and engineering in the world and of the milestones that marked our own identity.”
The exhibition is open to the public until Jan 22, 2021, from Monday to Friday, from 10h to 18h.
Go get to know your town.
