Here’s what Finnish fine artist, photographer, and multimedia artist with a background in biology Maija Annikki Savolainen says about her latest solo show:
“Paperworks is an ongoing investigation on light. It started with a folded A4 sheet and the series Sea/See. Rough photography, the fold on paper becomes a horizon line of an unidentified seascape far away. Paper is my observatory of sunlight and a gateway to another world.
The images are made with a folded, white A4 sheet placed in direct sunlight at different times of the day and year. When looking at the picture at a distance, one might see a horizon line. When taking a closer look, it becomes clear that there is something strange about the view. The horizon appears to be a fold on a sheet of paper, the colors are reflections of sunlight on the white surface; a little bit of information makes the eye see something else than before.”
The exhibition* runs until January 22, 2022.
*NOTE: The gallery is closed Saturdays and Sundays.
