“Have you seen Joker?
Have you seen Once upon a time…in Hollywood?
Have you seen Parasite?

…So what did you think?”

If you were alive in 2019, you’ve probably had at least one of the above controversial conversations, and maybe even lost some respect for a friend in the process.

But if you missed one (or all) of the above award-winning heavy-hitters – or just can’t get enough of Brad Pitt, Joaquim Phoenix, and/or that Korean dude — then you’re in luck. This January, Saldanha movie theater Espaço Nimas invites you to brush up on what everybody was talking about in 2019 when they weren’t talking about work or the weather, plus two Portuguese coat-tail riders.

The theater, somewhat ambitiously, calls it Os Grandes Filmes de 2019: sessões únicas e especiais, or “The Great Films of 2019: special and unique sessions.” They’re special and unique because after three of the screenings you’ll get a chance to argue with some strangers about the meaning of greatness.

Here’s the FULL PROGRAM (+info on the Portuguese greats):

Saturday, Jan 18:
19h – “Joker” – session followed by debate and discussion.
22h10 – “Once upon a time in… Hollywood.”

Sunday, Jan 19:
14h30 – “Parasites.”

Wednesday, Jan 22:
21h – Vitalina Varela* (2019), by Pedro Costa – session followed by conversation with Vitalina Varela, filmmaker Marta Mateus, Mrs Rita Rato and Ana Tica (socio-cultural activist).

Wednesday, Jan 29:
21h – A Herdade* (2019), by Tiago Guedes – session with talk and presence of director Tiago Guedes, producer Paulo Branco, and actors Sandra Faleiro, Albano Jerónimo, João Vicente, Ana Vilela da Costa, Beatriz Brás, and João Pedro Mamede

*English subtitles are likely but not guaranteed.

TICKETS: 7€ (at the theater).

Here’s one of the greatest scenes in movie history. Fight us.
