January 24

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 00:00, repeating until January 30, 2021

Some time during the last decade, for reasons still largely unknown, K-Pop made South Korea mainstream. Then, two years ago, Parasite brought South Korean cinema to the mainstream. And sixteen years before that, Oldboy brought South Korean cinema to the lesser-main-stream. However, this January, Cinemateca Portuguesa reminds us that South Korean cinema has actually been a thing for a while now.

Here’s what they say:
“The Republic of Korea, more commonly known as South Korea, has been internationally recognized since the 1990s as a major cinema country… Since then, in generic or specific festivals, the presence of South Korean cinema is frequent and striking…
However, we had never looked at Korean cinema from the classical period and it must be pointed out that despite the presence of certain films at international festivals in the sixties, some of which were awarded, Korean production prior to the nineties is, so to speak, unknown beyond the country’s borders. The eleven films that make up this cycle were made between 1948 and 1993, that is, between the founding of the Republic of Korea, with the division of the peninsula into two antagonistic states, born of the Cold War, until the beginning of the period of full democratization, in a country whose long military dictatorship had invested heavily in education, unlike most regimes of this type. This cycle allows us to glimpse the itinerary followed by cinema during the more than forty years that mediate between the founding of the South Korean state and the international recognition of the country’s cinema.”

Subtitled in English and Portuguese.

Tickets: 3,20€.
