to Jan 31 | ILLUSTRATION AND PAINTING EXHIBIT | Ana Stela Cunha e Rodrigo Ribeiro Saturnino: Lick You | Intendente | FREE

Lamber-te (“LICK YOU”) is the oh-so-controversially titled illustration and painting exhibition by locals Ana Stela Cunha and Rodrigo Ribeiro Saturnino (ROD), and here’s what its organizers say about it:

“In this exhibition, Ana Stela Cunha presents part of her collage work by/on the street, an interventionist. Lick-lick has been one of the means used for ironic denunciations. A woman, Brazilian and immigrant for 17 years, through collages she experiences a fusion between the language of the street and the so-called “cultured norm,” as a legacy of her passage through Linguistics in the academic universe. After “migrating” to Anthropology, she became even more interested in the relations between gender, language, power, “race.” With a long academic work that aspires to this dialogue with the arts, she searches the audiovisual and collages for new epistemologies to rethink power, transit, and identity relations.

In partnership with the artist ROD, they have developed materials that are different from those she usually uses, recreating a new aesthetic in dialogue with the contents.

ROD presents some works (paintings, illustrations, and posters) that are part of his work as a “graphic activist.” As a black queer and immigrant artist in Lisbon, ROD uses homoerotism, sexuality, and the colonial processes of producing a black body as critical keys to questioning some of the wrong idealizations around heteronormative masculinity.
In his work, the artist uses graphic forms, simple lines, and solid colors to compose images that stand out through bodies, faces, and panned positions of his memory and imagination. In this process, ROD tries to express himself in opposition to a falsified representation of absolute and masculine virility of the black man who concentrates on the penis and its surroundings and rejects his femininity, his homosexuality, and his transgender…”
