Gonçalo Pena was born in Lisbon in 1967, where he lives and works to this day. Gonçalo graduated from Belas Artes/ ESBAL in 1993. He did a Master’s degree in Communications at Universidade Nova Lisboa in 2001. From 1993 to 2004 he worked as an illustrator for newspapers and magazines. He received the Single Illustration Award by the Society for News Design in 2001. From 1996 to 2005, Gonçalo Pena was a professor at the Escola Superior de Artes e Design de Caldas da Rainha. Then he dedicated himself full-time to work as an artist.
For the next few weeks, you can check out Gonçalo’s solo show Metafísica at ZDB, a set of recent works that, in the words of the organizers, “once again demonstrate the distant commentary work that Gonçalo Pena has been materializing about style in painting in its relationship with the concept in a posture that owes so much to that of the producer/doer as to the historian or collector.”
Sounds metaphysically delightful to us.
