July 1, 2021 @ 19:30 - July 4, 2021 @ 20:30

€10 – €20

Here’s what Portugal’s CNB (aka Companhia Nacional de Bailado, aka “The National Dance Company”) says about its upcoming dance spectacular commemorating one of the swan songs of the Gulbenkian Ballet 16 years ago:
O Canto do Cisne (“the Swan Song”), choreographed by Clara Andermatt, was one of the last pieces danced by the Gulbenkian Ballet before its extinction. Challenged by CNB, the choreographer revisits the piece together with the original artistic team.
Based on the theme launched at the time, ‘The fascination of distant worlds,’ Clara Andermatt seeks the unknown through the path of mystery and surprise towards what is probably most enigmatic in everything we do not know: death. Formally, the choreographer chooses A Morte do Cisne, by Camille Saint-Saens, as a starting point, asking Vítor Rua to create variations on the original theme. Andermatt approaches death not as the end of anything, but as the beginning of the future it contains, plunging into metamorphosis and its transforming power. It is this moment that the choreographer identifies as the swan song. The present ends up revealing itself as a continuous realization that it is both past and future, because everything is in constant change. An idea that Clara Andermatt emphasizes quoting Peggy Phelan.”

Eerily appropriate stuff for these uncertain times…
