Bairro Em Festa (roughly “Neighborhood in Celebration”), much like Lisbon’s neighborhoods themselves, has undergone many changes since its inception. It started out as the humble Festas de Julho in 2012, celebrating one of the biggest hearts of the city — Largo do Intendente. Since then, it has only been growing, and this year the festival returns for its ninth edition.
Seven days of more than 60 events celebrating four of Lisbon’s lesser gentrified and most vibrant neighborhoods and their communities — most of them free of charge.
Here’s how the organizers describe it:
“The backbone – Avenida Almirante Reis – supports the vital organs of this area of the city: the districts of Intendente, Anjos, Pena, and Arroios, where, in different places, we created more or less improvised spaces for the programming that a collective of around 25 local entities offers to the community, with concerts, shows and workshops for families, exhibitions and installations, debates, cinema, and an art fair.”
