It seems that art has been on the periphery in recent months and that we have all been surviving on some surreal, pandemic-ridden island… Well, that’s about to change.
The Arte Periférica reopens its doors on May 18 — which is coincidentally International Museum Day 2020 and marks the gallery’s 29th anniversary. For this special day the gallery will hold the inauguration of “Como sobreviver a uma ilha” (“How to survive an island”) by artist Paulo Damião.
Here’s how Paulo describes it:
“This exhibition comes as a result of a trip I made to an island: Ireland. It is also, of course, the reflection of the effect that this physical, emotional, and spiritual journey had on me. This, perhaps, may have been provided because it already belongs to another island; the abstract idea of having lived there in times, even though it never happened, in a kind of catharsis, an ancestral feeling of belonging.
This trip alerted me to more questions than answers. We are all islands and within them the fragility of almost always being their only islander. I recognized faces and landscapes; I saw acquaintances/strangers, smells, houses, the comfort kitchen. I relived the poetics of belonging to a place.
Living on an island is, at the same time, resisting or letting yourself be seduced by its horizon and having the idea of escape and refuge in the same proportions, involved in the same desire. An islander is a survivor of himself, every day.
An island is like a mother, sometimes with a thousand arms to the heart, sometimes with a thousand arrows until it hardens or hurts.”

Inauguration on May 18 at 18h.
The show is open until July 8th, every day, from 10h to 19h.
