Mystério Tremendo is the Portuguese painter Rui Serra’s first solo exhibition of drawings.

From the organizers:

Serra, through the process of scratching lines, arrives at an alternative understanding of an image as the product of a laborious process. The figurative drawings recover elements of compositions of the highest Western visual tradition, such as Jan van Eyck, Benozzo Gozzoli, Pieter Bruegel (the Elder), Hendrick Avercamp, Rembrandt van Rijn, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Odilon Redon, or Alfred Kubin, but are also the result of a manipulation of the author’s personal photographs.

The title of the exhibition – Mystery Tremendo – lies in the Latin expression Mysterium Tremendum et Fascinans from the theological context, which formulates something as complex as the notion of God, but also refers to all the mystery implicit in the contemporary creative act.
