to May 22 | SIMULTANEOUS ART EXHIBITS | Underdogs10: Add Fuel + Halfstudio | FREE
April 9 - May 22FREE
Underdogs Gallery, like fellow underdog Atlaslisboa, managed to survive COVID thus far. Mostly due to luck, but in part, because we both know that time isn’t linear, and because we still have a dream. For this and other reasons, for the next month-and-a-half, Underdogs is hosting not one but two simultaneous art exhibits, by two local heavy hitters.
Here’s what they say about both:
“We arepleased to present ‘CHRONOS REDUX,’ a solo exhibition by Portuguese visual artist Add Fuel in Lisbon, Portugal.
If the age of reason dictates that time is linear, ancestral observations suggest that, on the contrary, time is cyclical and rhythmic, that both the natural patterns and history repeat themselves in an eternal return. Prompted by the haphazard and uncertain pace that 2020 imposed on us – the forced breaks, the disruption, the unpredictability –, Add Fuel decided to take stock, to revisit his work and his path, the result of which is materialized here in a dialogue between linearity and cyclicity, between continuity and intermittence, between innovation and patternisation.
In simultaneous with Add Fuel’s exhibition at the gallery, Underdogs Capsule presents ‘WE STILL HAVE A DREAM,’ a solo show by the Portuguese artists Halfstudio conceived specifically for this context.
Based on the reuse of discarded objects – handsaws, circular saws, paintings, a metal letter from a commercial sign, or light boxes, among others, recovered and primed in order to receive painted or printed works –, the set of pieces that gives shape to this entirely new body of works explores the idea of recovery, of giving a ‘second chance’ – both to the very objects and, symbolically, to humanity itself in the present context.”
Opening reception with the artists:
