Living in exile can be tough, as some of Atas’ own self-exiled staff know…
Throughout Portugal’s version of the Trump era — i.e. the Estado Novo dictatorship — countless locals decided to pack up and go rather than stand by and watch, or worse.

Here’s how the organizers of #ECOS – Exílios, contrariar silêncios (“#ECHOES – Exiles, counteract silences”) describe this historical and all-too-relevant exhibit:

“This was an important flow of people in the history of Portugal. Men and women fleeing repression, imprisonment, the Colonial War, and poverty have come a long way, including those in many European countries. They went into exile in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Sweden, Denmark, etc..

The exhibition addresses the memory and material traces of these paths, from the clandestine “border jump” to the objects that marked everyday life, and those that came in the return bag.

Millions of people continue to travel the path of exile in search of refuge, home, and shelter. The stories #Echoes account also bring us to the present and let us think about building belonging places in Europe today.”

Show up daily, 10h-17h, until November 29th.
