“Gathering the best collection of nineteenth century art in the country, the MNAC also preserves a collection of Portuguese art from the XX and XXI centuries that allows a comprehensive and qualified view on the processes of Modernity and Postmodernity in Portugal.

The criterion that presided over it was the agreement with the international artistic time, from Modernity to Contemporaneity – sometimes anticipating it – and the critical and public recognition of these authors. They are all fundamental names of the modern Historiography of Portuguese Art, and any of them can be included in a broad Historiography of Modern and Western Contemporary Art.”
