WEEKLY PODCASTS | Gonçalo M. Tavares: Dicionário de Artistas (and more) | FREE

March 4 - March 24

FREE

Here’s what the CCB says about their free weekly podcasts*:
“The Centro Cultural de Belém aims to promote culture, developing creation and diffusion in all its modalities, from theater to dance, from classical music to jazz, from opera to cinema.

And here’s what Gonçalo M. Tavares, host of Dicionário de Artistas, one of the CCB’s more popular podcasts, adds:
“Contemporary art as a starting point; the literature takes it and goes without looking back for a second; the vague zero point is calculated – the name of an artist, a work – but everything that comes next exists in that text that begins to think through its own head.
A text has a head and it is with it that the text thinks.
A visual clue is enough for the language to set out and advance along narrow paths and steep detours, uphill and downhill.

I am interested in this: art that is seen as a way of emitting behind it a language that it is necessary to extract from the ground of the work itself by force. The look of the writer does this: what he sees becomes a word, but there is in this clear beginning – contemporary works of art – a power that guides the text from the inside. Without this beginning – contemporary art – there would be no such texts.

This Dictionary of Artists, this Museum, starts from a detail, tiny detail or very central center, of an artist’s work, never of the biography, and from there the text goes elsewhere.
Like an animal that is hungry, it leaves the nest to a point where it senses food, so the text breaks down into its life.
But nothing didactic or explanatory, the texts in this Dictionary are autonomous beings who go out on the street free and quite alone after midnight.”

While you can’t really go out on the street free and quite alone after midnight these days, this can be a starting point of sorts.

*You’ll need some Portuguese for these (but it’s great listening practice).

Listen for free here.
