Located inside the central garden of the Goethe Institute, this cafe is known for serving decent German beers, Mediterranean and German dishes, and plenty of vegetarian options. Picnic tables are nestled under the cover of large trees, while cafe tables are sprawled neatly under Paulaner umbrellas for that true beer-garden vibe. The setting and the beers are worth the trip, but the menu leaves much to be desired if you stray away from beer-garden favorites like sausages and krauts.

But you might get lucky. There are soups and menu specials that change around every day, and there are plenty of yummy desserts, drinks, and coffees you can try. Our advice is to keep it simple and don’t be tempted to try poké there. You read that right.

The Goethe-Institut itself is a cultural institute that is federally funded by Germany. It promotes the study of the German language (check out the newly-renovated library!) and fosters cultural exchange across borders through cinema, concerts, literary readings, workshops, debates, and more. All in all, it’s well worth supporting the institute by spending your lunch hour in a beer garden, whether you sprechen or not.
