Drip, drip, drop little April Showers! Escape your rainy lives and come to sunny Lisbon. Does it still get cold at night? Yes. But there are plenty of shows, bars, and people to keep you toasty until the wee hours.
The single biggest event in Lisbon in April is on the 25th. No, it is not like Santo António. This a day of remembrance and celebration of the Carnation Revolution of 1974, when Portugal ended its dictatorship without the loss of a single life. The day features marches, music, and presidential ceremonies and usually plenty of random street parties.
And there are plenty of other things going on as well.
Nothing spells spring like love, subterfuge, and the impending threat of death by impalement. Lucky for you, there are four performances of the opera L’étoile running at Teatro Nacional de São Carlos on the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 6th of April.
What is Lisbon famous for? Azulejos (that’s tiles to you and me), cork, bread, and bacalhau. But it’s not just cod at Peixe em Lisboa. Running from the 4th to the 14th, this fishy festival affords you the chance to try a range of seafood-based dishes from renowned chefs.
Want to see a bunch of boys stamping their feet and strumming their old-timey guitars? The legendary novo-folk band Mumford and Sons are touring their latest album, Delta, and will be playing Altice Arena on the 25th.
And sweet folksy tunes aren’t the sweetest things in Portugal this month, since Óbidos Chocolate Festival is back from the 25th of April to the 5th of May. Ok, so you’ll have to travel a little way out of the capital, but come on people, it’s an international chocolate festival.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, however, with new events popping up all the time. Check out our full calendar here, and subscribe to our newsletter for a blast of events in your inbox every Friday.
