Sure, you can get a cheaper cup of coffee just about anywhere, but this place is famed for being one of Pessoa’s cafés of choice AND it’s right on Praça do Comércio along the tourist circuit, so you pay to kill two birds with one stone. Go in for a light snack on your way to someplace else, especially if you see room at the counter. It’s admittedly delightful to sit next to the artistic tile renderings of Pessoa and Camões while eating a pastel da nata, or a piece of bolo de bolacha cake. Alternatively, bring a book or a notepad and sit under the arches for a more literary snack, and see what Pessoa was so excited about.
