You can’t go five steps in Lisbon without hearing the name José Avillez. This celebrity chef has opened a high-end spot aside the Teatro do Chiado in which he serves some of his famous Belcanto dishes at a discount. At first glance, the menu is affordable, but the dishes are small, so by the end of the night if you’re full, you’ll need to eat ramen noodles for a week to compensate. The space is sleek and modern with a lively atmosphere and a professional, helpful staff. The food itself is innovative to say the least. Some are tasty, others are too strange to be delicious, but they’re all definitely different from the norm and intended to be served in “acts” (or stages if you like). If you aren’t into making decisions, go with the first fancy cocktail with a gin base that catches your eye, and choose the epic tasting menu. It’ll set you back 50€ but at least you’ll get the royal treatment.
