Momentous Eventus: All That Jazz Edition

"It's not exclusive, but inclusive, which is the whole spirit of jazz." Herbie Hancock.

Happy belated Dia da Liberdade, dear Lisbon! Freedom-wise, that sure was one for the books, ey? Also, happy International Dance Day, World Wish Day, Viral Video Day, and upcoming International Jazz Day, everybody! If you wish to make a video of you dancing to jazz go viral, or if you’re just looking for some culture to take your mind off of the ongoing pandemic, war, and/or Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial — here’s some stuff happening around Lisbon this weekend and onwards that might do the trick:

Apr 29
FREE CLASSICAL CONCERT:
Tonight, Lisbon’s Solistas da Metropolitana come to Museu Nacional da Música to present the work of Darius Milhaud and Heitor Villa-Lobos. Despite being born on different continents, these heavy-hitters of the previous century’s musical world had a lot in common in terms of style and influence, as said solistas will attempt to demonstrate, free of charge.

TECHNO PARTY:
Also tonight, Berlin-based and currently-in-Lisbon DJs Mary Yuzovskaya and Paula Koski (and local Lournco Lvgs) come to Arroz Estúdios for some “cerebral techno” of the “deep dancefloor” variety, and you can get on board for 7-10€.

Apr 30
ANOTHER FREE CLASSICAL CONCERT:
Sometimes, a piece of chamber music written by Mozart for a quartet requires an extra pair of hands. Hence, this Saturday night, not four but five Solistas da Metropolitana come to Teatro Thalia to interpret a few Quartetos de Mozart, once again free of charge.

FILM SCREENING AND TRIBUTE CONCERT:
Meanwhile, B.Leza Clube presents Noite Manuel d’Novas — an evening celebrating another musical legend and his legacy, complete with a documentary by his son, an interpretation of his songs by a number of locals, and a DJ set. Entry is 10€.

Apr 30-May 1
OUTDOOR MINI MUSIC FESTIVAL:
This Saturday and Sunday, Lisbon’s Bagpipe Association invites you to Largo da Graça for the first edition of LIBERFOLK — a series of workshops and concerts that celebrate the months of April and May, the commemorations of Liberty Day, as well as the “Freedom to Dance, Freedom to Sing, Freedom to Dream.” Entry is free.

Now through May 8
INDEPENDENT FILM FESTIVAL:
IndieLisboa — aka one of the country’s biggest film festivals — hit various locations throughout the city yesterday for its 19th edition. It will continue to do so for the next 10 days, with plenty of cinema fun for both kids and adults. Most screenings start at 4,50€.

Now through Dec 31
MULTIMEDIA EXHIBIT:
And, finally, LisbonQuake is described by its organizers as “a thematic experience that allows us to see and feel” and, “in the form of a journey through time, to discover more about the Great Lisbon Earthquake of 1755.” It hit Lisbon earlier this month, and tickets start at 21€ for adults and 14,50€ for kids.

For more stuff that hit and is hitting town now that spring has sort of sprung, see the What’s On portion of this website. Dance, wish, viral video, and jazz well, friends. And be excellent to each other.
One.
