September is here, and for many locals this means it’s time to start replying to emails again. Then again, Lee “Scratch” Perry did once say, “I never liked to work because I don’t want no one to be a slave.” So… Anyhoo, September also means that things are starting to pick up around town event-wise as well. For example, here’s some cultural stuff happening today and onwards that caught our attention:
Sept 3
MULTIMEDIA PERFORMANCE AT THE CASTLE:
Kick off your weekend with the timeless story of an innocent man seeking revenge after a private fourteen-year lockdown (in a COVID-free world at that), as well as some interpretations of water, presented in musical and visual form. O Conde de Monte Cristo by the Orbis Orchestra and Pedro Teixeira da Silva comes to São Jorge Castle this Friday night, and entry is free.
Sept 3-4
FILM FESTIVAL LAUNCH:
While Cinalfama (which is, like, a combination of the words “cinema” and “Alfama”) kicks off in the historical hood of Alfama this weekend, bringing with it two evenings of newcomer cinematic fun in preparation for their 2022 edition. The screenings are also free to enter, and all the films have English subtitles.
Sept 3-11
Also, everybody knows that it’s not over until the fat lady sings. However, not everyone knows that OperaFest Lisboa wraps up its second edition this coming week. Before that’s over, you have the chance to learn how to sing like a fat lady (or other) too, with some classes on Friday and Saturday, and/or catch one (or more) of five different operatic performances, both Friday and Saturday and throughout the week, starting at 15€ a pop.
Sept 4
ARTISANAL BEER WORKSHOP:
Have you ever considered saving some money by brewing your own beer? Or maybe even earning some money by calling said beer artisanal? If so, then Lovecraft Gastropub Lisboa invites you to an all-day workshop this Saturday in which you might learn what exactly does make a beer artisanal and, more importantly, how to make it. You’ll need 75€ and some Portuguese for this one, though.
Sept 6-7
OPEN-AIR CINEMA:
For more film fun but of the less obscure variety, Arroz Estudios and Black Cat Cinema Lisbon present two nightly outdoor screenings of two very different Hollywood hits – Drive and Green Book (Mon-Tue, respectively), and tickets for each are 6,50-9,50€.
Sept 7-13
HORROR FILM FESTIVAL:
And – we’ve said it before, but, in case you missed it – Lisbon’s biggest annual scary flick fest MOTELX descends upon downtown Lisbon again next week to distract you from the real-life horror of the last two years with hundreds of hours of film, local and international, new and old, famous and other, as well as concerts, talks, workshops, parties, kids’ stuff, and more. The fun commences next Tuesday.
UPCOMING MUSIC FESTIVAL (Sept 10-11):
Meanwhile, Nossa Lisboa 2021 hits Altice Arena next weekend with two days of non-stop music festival fun. Here, some of the country’s best-known talent will be performing back to back on three different stages, and tickets are on sale now (and they’re cheaper if you get them before Sept. 9).
To see what else you can do in September and onwards when you’re off work, see our what’s on section. Enjoy the rest of your summer, remember to remain vigilant, and be safe out there. And, of course, RIP to The Upsetter…
