Momentous Eventus: Very Verão Edition

"As you heat the planet up, it's just like boiling a pot." Elon Musk

Florence + The Machine’s Florence Leontine Mary Welch may have spoken a bit too soon at this year’s NOS Alive festival last week — because it seems that here in Portugal the dog days are not, in fact, over. Parts of the country are literally on fire; despite the influx of tourists, the economy is struggling because of that one Russian dude; and coronavirus, unfortunately, still seems to be a thing too. So be safe out there, people, and take care of yourselves, and each other. Also, Happy World Day for International Criminal Justice, Happy 67th Birthday to Disneyland, and Happy World Emoji Day — in no particular order. Oh, and here’s some culture happening around town tonight and onwards:

July 15
JAZZ CONCERTS IN A GARDEN:
Tonight is the last night of the 2022 edition of Jazz im Goethe-Garten. Three German connoseirs of the genre, including one DJ, will be doing their things as the sun sets over Lisbon, and entry is 5-7€.

SOLO MAGIC SHOW:
Also tonight, local semi-celebrity, illusionist, and general man of mystery Magic Douglas comes to Camones CineBar to make some cigarettes disappear and reappear, make some things spontaneously combust, and more. Entry is 5€.

July 15-30
CLASSICAL MUSIC AND DANCE PERFORMANCES:
Starting tonight, Banco Millenium’s Festival ao Largo 2022 invites you to one of the city’s most central squares to experience a series of nightly performances from some of the country’s top symphonies, orchestras, and dance and theater ensembles — free of charge.

July 16
FREE DJ SET IN A GARDEN:
The CCB’s DJs no Jardim das Oliveiras is a month-long Saturday presentation of some local and other DJs under the summer evening sky (and some olive trees). Tomorrow they welcome local record shop employee and DJ Hugo Moutinho, aka Mr. Mitsuhirato, to spin some indie, disco, and electronica in order to “generate the essential premise: the will to dance.” Entry is free.

LATE-NIGHT DJ PARTY:
Meanwhile, on the opposite end of town, Beato’s Arroz Estúdios presents Larry Quest’s [Pleasure of Love] Release Party — aka six hours or so with Larry and four of his colleagues, aka an “underground deep dance funk warrior,” a “one of a kind plant-based music selector with jazz roots,” a “prolific producer and advanced DJ with countless mind-blowing releases under his belt,” and “a looming artist & DJ with creative curating skills who weaves music stories on the decks.” Tickets are 8-11€.

July 17
FREE CONCERT (AND DJ SETS) ON A ROOFTOP:
This Sunday eve, London-, Moscow-, The Bronx-, Cork-, and Lisbon-bred locals Karl Godard, Anya Karmanova, and The Tourorists come to the rooftop of Carpintarias de São Lázaro for six hours of good sounds, good food, good beer, and general good. Entry is donation-based.

July 20-Aug31
WEEKLY OPEN-AIR CINEMA:
For the next seven Wednesday nights, one of Lisbon’s finest museums, aka Museu da Marioneta, invites you to Cine-Esperança, aka a series of some big-name film screenings in their back garden (which was actually a movie theater some 100 years ago). Tickets are 3€ and include the museum’s permanent collection, as well as popcorn.

July 21
CONCERTS:
And, finally, this coming Thursday night, EDP Cool Jazz 2022 welcomes Yann Tiersen and a few locals to Cascais to emo things up a bit, and the 37,10-53€ tickets are still available.

See what else you can do as a semi-respite from the boiling pot that is Lisbon in the near future via our What’s On section. And stay hydrated, yo, both literally and spiritually.
