Portugal saw 84,558 births in 2020, representing a 2.6% drop compared to 2019, according to results published by INE (Portugal’s National Statistics Institute).
Meanwhile, the country registered 123,467 deaths last year – 10.2% more than the previous year. INE attributes this hike in large part to COVID related deaths.
This marks the 12th consecutive year that the country’s rate of natural increase (RNI) was negative.
