Reflector #42: Brams – “Portugal”

The Catalonian band wants what Portugal has, sort of.

Brams are a ska rock band from Catalnia, and, sure enough, this is about themselves. Active in the nineties and early noughties, a recurring theme in their socially engaged lyrics is pro-independence slogans. In “Portugal” off Aldea Global Thematic Park (2001), the chorus in Catalan goes:

L’autonomia que ens cal
és la de Portugal

which would translate as, “The autonomy we need is the same as Portugal’s,” (i.e., independence).
Ironically, this comparison ignoring 900 years of history might be a typically…erm…hispanocentric thing to make.
