The fatal police shooting of Cabo Verdean immigrant Odair Moniz on Oct. 21 — the investigation on what exactly happened is ongoing, but the shooting took place amid a police chase in the Cova da Moura neighborhood of Amadora in Lisbon — has led to what the local news media has been describing as “incidents” across the city, such as cars and garbage bins being set on fire.
On Saturday, the Vida Justice movement organized a protest in Lisbon, attracting thousands to a rally calling for police reform and justice for Moniz, according to Euronews.
The protest that was planned by the far-right anti-immigrant Chega party in support of the police for the same day — and originally for the same location, until Vida Justice moved its protest to avoid a violent confrontation — attracted about 300 people, according to Euronews.
Good to have the math on where the country stands, for now, as far as how many people will come out for which cause.
