June in Lisbon arrives with the smell of grilled sardines, the sound of double-entendre pimba music drifting through the streets, and the collective understanding that sleep is now very much optional. Santo António season officially peaks on the night of 12 June, but in reality, the city spends the entire month in celebration mode, with neighborhood arraiais spilling across squares, staircases, miradouros, and improbably steep streets from Alfama to Campolide. Here’s a decent list of Santo António events to get you started, but we just look for colorful streamers and follow wafting scents of freshly poured beer and grilled goodies. Alongside the beer-fueled dancing and plastic basil pots, Lisbon’s cultural calendar is equally packed this year: archaeological film festivals, women-led clown cabarets, open-air cinema nights, experimental art exhibitions, literary gatherings, castle workshops, vintage markets, and enough live music to accidentally soundtrack your entire summer with unexpected accordions. In other words, if you were hoping for a quiet June in Lisbon, you’ve come to the wrong city.
June 5 and 6 | INTERNATIONAL FEMALE CLOWN FESTIVAL | Tem Graça | Orlando Ribeiro Library Auditorium | FREE
Lisbon is about to get a little sillier — in the best possible way. The sixth edition of TEM GRAÇA, Portugal’s only international festival dedicated to women clowns and comedians, celebrates female-led humor from around the world. This year’s highlight is The Red Cabaret, a delightfully unpredictable variety show featuring performers from Portugal, Brazil, England, and France, blending clowning, magic, juggling, puppetry, and a healthy dose of mischief. Before the main event, audiences can experience an intimate five-minute peek-show performance by Brazilian artist Kelly Lima, promising secrets, laughter, and a few revelations through a very small window. Lisbon’s beloved Feira das Almas is turning 14, and naturally, it’s celebrating the only way it knows how: with vintage treasures, handmade oddities, good music, and a healthy dose of neighbourhood charm. Organised by the ever-creative crew behind Anjos70, the alternative market returns to its roots in Intendente for a full day of independent makers, local crafts, second-hand gems, workshops, and live performances. Expect the sort of atmosphere where you arrive intending to “just have a quick look” and somehow leave three hours later clutching a retro jacket, handmade earrings, and a vague desire to start up a ceramics hobby. The Lisbon Book Fair returns to Eduardo VII Park, transforming the city’s green heart into a paradise for bookworms. Drifting Signals, Lasting Traces, a new group exhibition by the Aea: Culture Initiative team, at Aea Space inside TIMS café & padaria, takes that question and runs off-grid with it. Bringing together artists from Portugal and the U.K., the show explores the more niche systems of exchange that go beyond screens and pings — from underground plant networks and physical memory to invisible digital infrastructures and fleeting human connections. The show mixes installation, visual art, and more to investigate what lingers after messages are sent, missed, or transformed and invites you to slow down and pay attention to the signals you might normally overlook. From May through October, São Jorge Castle’s Sundays at the Castle series transforms the hilltop landmark into a playground for curious families, with interactive activities designed to bring Lisbon’s past vividly back to life.
