Whats on in Lisbon in August 2025

The best events in town when most Lisboetas aren't here

Lisbon might feel a little emptier than usual. Or at least, the ratio of Portuguese-to-tourists has shifted dramatically now that so many Lisboetas have jumped in cars, trains, planes, and autocarros to make their annual escape from the scalding city. But if you’re one of the few holding down the fort, or just arriving with wide eyes and a camera roll to fill, don’t worry: August in Lisbon is still packed with things to see, hear, and do.

From candlelit soundscapes and open-air polyphonic singing to irreverent art, experimental dance, and jazz that doesn’t play by the rules, this month’s cultural calendar proves the city’s creative energy doesn’t take a vacation. Here’s the best of what’s on — sweaty, vibrant, and well worth sticking around for.

to Aug 15 | EXHIBITION | Applause: 40 Years Celebrating the Show | National Museum of Theatre and Dance | 5€

Drama, dance, and diva energy take center stage. This exhibition pulls back the velvet curtain on legends like Eunice Muñoz, Amália Rodrigues, and Mário Viegas — plus backstage giants in scenography and dance who helped shape the spotlight. Bonus: Paula Rego’s full costume collection for the Gulbenkian Ballet is on display for the first time ever. It’s a glam deep-dive into how performance leaves its mark on memory — and how we keep clapping long after the curtain falls. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday. Read more here.

to Aug 31 | PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT | Mario Gomes | Between Petals: Portraits of Flowers from Estufa Fria | 3,60€

The artist didn’t pick the flowers — the flowers picked him… or so he says. Wandering through Lisbon’s Estufa Fria, photographer Mario Gomes followed the garden’s quiet cues, capturing a fever dream of tangled textures and saturated stillness. It’s flora gone full on in one of the city’s lushest hideaways. Worth the price of admission and then some! Find out more here.

to Aug 2 | URBAN ART EXHIBITION | Memória Material: Add Fuel and PichiAvo | Underdogs Gallery | FREE

These are the last two days of the exhibition that asks what happens when memory sticks to surfaces. Tiles, ceramics, and street-side textures are used like time capsules; Add Fuel digs into the Portuguese psyche one azulejo at a time, remixing nostalgia through pattern and color. PichiAvo taps into the classical canon, blending Greco-Roman myths with urban sprawl. Together, they blur the lines between the ornamental and the ancestral — where personal memory meets cultural inheritance, and where the past refuses to stay put. Read our interview with Add Fuel here. And read more about the exhibition here.

Aug 1 – 3 | DANCE | Choreographic Orchestra of the Wild | Monsanto Interpretation Canter | Fri. & Sat. 19h and Sun. 16h | FREE

Six dancers and a local choir dive headfirst into an experimental mashup of movement, music, and meaning-making. It’s physical theater meets forest worship — less “watch us,” more “join the cult.” Expect sweat, sound, and a reminder that you’re not separate from nature — just badly out of practice. Click here for more information.

August 1 – 10 | JAZZ FESTIVAL | Jazz in August | Gulbenkian | 12€+

Jazz em Agosto is back to blow up whatever you thought jazz was. This year’s edition at the Gulbenkian isn’t about nostalgia and playing it safe. It’s about the rule-breakers who’ve got jazz in their blood but refuse to play it straight. Think saxophonist  Darius Jones on August 3 and a lineup full of sonic curveballs. Some shows are already sold out, so move fast. Check out the full agenda here.

August 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30 | Sunset at the Castle | Castelo São Jorge | 19h | FREE

Lisbon’s best view meets dancefloor heat. The fifth edition of this sundown music series brings afrobeat, house, disco, and hip-hop to the castle walls every Saturday in August. Expect local legends like YNES (Aug 2), AGNES (Aug 9), DJ Fellaz (Aug 16), Irmãos Makossa (Aug 23), and DJ RMA (Aug 30). Come early — this one fills up fast. Pick up your tickets from 18h—max two per person, first-come, first-served. Read more about the musicians here!

August 7 – Sept 16 | OPERA FESTIVAL | OperaFest Lisbon and Oeiras | Various Locations | 20€ – 50€

The 6th edition of OperaFest Lisboa e Oeiras 2025 is all about love — that beautiful disaster that gives humanity something to sing about. Check out Verdi’s “La Traviata” (Aug 7, 9, and 10) at the Convento da Cartuxa in Caxias, sweat it out at an Operatic Rave (Aug 8) at the Cloisters Convent of Cartuxa, dive into Purcell’s baroque “Dido and Aeneas,” at the Aula Magna (Campo Grade), or await a couple of cine-opera concerts at Cinemateca Portuguesa (Sept. 3 and 4).

Aug 8, 15, 22, 29 | PARTY | Apupu by Décio | Musicbox | 0h30 – ? | 10,82 – 12€

Apupu is all about rhythm, style, and street swagger. Think Afrobeat, Amapiano, Funk, Hip-Hop, and R&B colliding in a blaze of sound and sweat. Born from one man’s aesthetic vision and now one of Lisbon’s biggest creative magnets, Apupu turns the volume up on what a night out should feel like: loud, proud, and unapologetically alive. Not a bad place to end your evening. Get reduced price advance tickets here.

Aug 14 – 17 | MUSIC FESTIVAL| O Sol da Caparica | Parque Urbano da Costa Caparica | 30€ – 166€

Sol da Caparica is back to light up the coast with four days of wall-to-wall Lusophone sound. From pop to hip hop, rock to electronica, and everything in between, this beachside bash at Parque Urbano da Costa de Caparica should give concertgoers a soundscape of scenes from some neighboring beaches: loud, proud, and impossible to sit still through. Check out the full lineup here, where you can also get tickets.

Aug 14 | FAMILY-FRIENDLY WORKSHOP | The Archaeology of Things | Teatro Romano | 15h | 3€

Grab a trowel (metaphorically) and step into the dusty boots of an archaeologist — just for 75 minutes. This hands-on adventure invites kids (and their grown-ups) to dig into the mysteries of the past, from crumbling cities to ancient theatres. What secrets are hiding under our feet? It’s curious, clever, and entirely in Portuguese. Tiny Indiana Joneses welcome — adult sidekicks required. Learn more about the workshop here.

Aug 15 | CHORAL CONCERT | Cante Alentejano with Os da Boina | Largo de Santo António da Sé | 18h30 | FREE

Os da Boina are bringing 14 powerful voices straight from Estremoz and Monforte to the heart of Lisbon for a sunset concert that echoes with centuries of tradition. In honor of Saint Anthony’s 834th birthday (yes, you read that right), this free open-air performance will fill Largo de Santo António da Sé with the deep, resonant harmonies of cante alentejano — a UNESCO-recognized vocal style that’s as soulful as it is uniquely Portuguese. Expect regional favorites, plus a debut piece written just for the occasion. Old-world vibes, no ticket required. Read more here.

Aug 23 | STRING QUARTET CONCERT | Candlelight Concert: The Best of Hans Zimmer | Epic Sana Marquês Hotel | 21h30 | 25,50 – 40€

Candlelight concerts are back, setting some of Lisbon’s most atmospheric venues aglow with hundreds of flickering candles and the epic sounds of Hans Zimmer. If you’ve felt your pulse race during Inception, Interstellar, or The Dark Knight, you’ve already met the man: Zimmer is the Oscar-winning composer behind some of Hollywood’s most iconic soundtracks. This 60-minute set is a sweeping, spine-tingling ride through his greatest hits — from Gladiator to Pirates of the Caribbean — perfect for film buffs, music lovers, and anyone over the age of six with a soul.
