What’s on in Lisbon in August

August is Lisbon offers just enough cultural surprises to make you forget everyone else is on holiday.

August is when Lisbon exhales (and the locals bugger off). The morning commute gives way to lazy coffees under the trees, the city’s usual rush softens, and there’s finally time to wander somewhere, unless the shopkeepers are on vacation, of course. This month’s to-dos are a safe bet, as most take place in outdoor venues that would be pretty tough to lock down. One day you might find yourself browsing vinyl records or vintage treasures, the next you’re watching an avant-garde dance performance in the woods, catching world-class jazz under the stars, or waching a classic film on a picnic blanket.

Of course, summer isn’t over just because the city has emptied out. There are opera performances in historic cloisters, seaside music festivals, and enough markets, exhibitions, and cultural oddities to keep you happily occupied until September. Boas férias de verão!
