July is here, and Lisbon isn’t slowing down after the Marchas Populares. Between ballet under the stars, Lego skyscrapers, and late-night ensembles echoing through ancient ruins, the city is slipping into one hell of a sweet summer.
to July 27 | TILE EXHIBIT: QUERUBIM LAPA | Museu Nacional do Azulejo | 10h – 18h | 5 – 10€
Check out this full-on reconstruction of Querubim Lapa’s gloriously tiled 1980s kitchen, salvaged from a Lisbon flat and now on display with sketches, a scale model, and family interviews. It’s a playful tribute to one of Portugal’s most imaginative ceramicists on the 100th anniversary of his birth — and well worth a visit if you like your tiles with a side of whimsy and the occasional tile fail, should one look closely enough. Read more here and remember, the museum is closed on Mondays.
to July 30 | PHOTO EXHIBITION | AJA – Associação José Afonso | Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat, 16h – 19h | FREE
This quiet, powerful exhibition draws from the stories of young Portuguese who went underground or into exile to avoid the colonial wars of the ’60s and ’70s, then connects them to the struggles of today’s migrants fleeing war, poverty, and repression. Definitely worth a peek given the current geopolitical climate. Read more about it here.
July 2 – 15 | MUSIC PERFORMANCES | International Youth Music Festival | Various Locations | 21h30 | FREE
Several standout concerts are taking place in iconic venues across the city. On July 2, the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestra performs amid the ruins of the Convento do Carmo. On July 8, the Sacred Heart Canossian College Choir from Macau brings their voices to the Palácio da Ajuda. The July 9 concert at Convento do Carmo features both the Taipei Philharmonic Youth Ensemble and the Montreal Suzuki String Orchestra. The festival wraps up in Lisbon on July 15 with a performance by Portugal’s Quarteto Tágide at the Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea do Chiado. The festival continues into August, so check out the schedule here to plan ahead.
July 2 and 16 | PUB QUIZ (ENGLISH) | Cerveteca | 19h | 2€
Tried and tested, this is one of the best pub quizzes in town, and it happens on the first and third Wednesdays of every month. Excellent beer, friendly vibes, and well-researched questions lead to a fun night out with friends and maybe a prize or two for the brainiest bunch. No registration necessary, just show up a little early to grab a table for your team.
July 4, 11, and 25 | WORLD MUSIC CONCERT SERIES | 21h45| Fábrica da Pólvora | FREE
On July 4, the Med 7Lua25 Orkestra makes its national debut with six top-tier musicians from across the Mediterranean and Lusophone worlds, each bringing their own twist to this cross-cultural Festival Sete Sóis Sete Luas. On the 11th, Cape Verdean legend Tibau Tavares dives deep into the islands’ musical soul with batuko, morna, funaná, and more. And on the 25th, Italian folk powerhouse Ambrogio Sparagna storms the stage with the spirit (and squeezebox) of the Orquestra Popolare Italiana in tow. Check out the program here for more information.
July 6, 13, 20, 27 | OUTJAZZ FESTIVAL | Parque Urbano de Miraflores | 17h to Sunset | FREE
Check out Subnoia, Vicente Oliveira Trio, Ya Sin, and the Gilherme Fradinho Quintet, each followed by a DJ who will spin ’til sunset. Expect a mix of jazz, soul, funk, hip-hop, and a few surprises along the way. Bring the family for the main act, as Outjazz is family-friendly in the early hours. This festival runs up through the end of September, so click here for the lineup.
July 10 – 12 | BALLET PERFORMANCE | Festival ao Largo – 17th Edition | Largo de São Carlos | 22h | FREE
From July 10 to 12, the Companhia Nacional de Bailado steps into the spotlight with modern choreography set to excerpts from Luís de Camões’ Os Lusíadas, layered over a soundscape of 16th-century Iberian music. The second act is one for the purists: George Balanchine’s “Toccata” and “Capriccio”, set to Stravinsky’s “Violin Concerto in D.”
Not your bag? On July 4, the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos’ Male Choir, alongside a brass and wind ensemble, will perform excerpts from Sete Predicações of Os Lusíadas, followed by the Female Choir’s performance of “Madrigais Camonianos” on the 5th. Later, Verdi’s Aida and Massenet’s Thaïs will get the full concert treatment (July 15–16 and 26–28, respectively), with international casts and all the soaring arias you’d expect. In between, July 18 promises a choral blockbuster with a program of Great Opera Choirs, and on July 19, Largo do Chiado turns into an open-air cinema for La Bohème. Pick your poison by checking out the program here.
July 10 – 12 | NOS ALIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL | Passeio Marítimo de Algés | 84€
Day passes are still available for the last 2 days of the festival, which, depending on the ticketholder, can either be one’s idea of paradise or one’s own private hell. Expect an eclectic mix of musical acts, overpriced food truck fare, ever-present crowds, and well-marked porta-johns that are all worth it if one of your favorite bands is part of the lineup. Here’s the lineup.
to Sept 28 | LEGO EXPO | Cordaria Naçional | Daily, 10h – 21h | 10 – 17€
If you like your art miniature and your fun maximal, head to Europe’s largest Lego exhibition—complete with a “fun zone” to inspire your own Lego masterpieces. Snap a few absurd selfies while you’re at it in the adjacent 3D “fun gallery,” which you can access for half price with entry to the exhibit. Bonus: kids under 95cm get in free, and you can save 50 centimos by purchasing your tickets online here.
to October 12 | FASHION EXHIBITION: VIVIENNE WESTWOOD | MUDE Museum | 10h – 19h/21h | 15€
It’s worth a trip to MUDE to celebrate the late, great Dame Vivienne Westwood with a retrospective that pulls from centuries of fashion to show how she twisted historical silhouettes into bold, modern statements. Around 50 pieces—corsets, bustles, prints, and punk—track her journey from 18th-century references to the raw energy of the ’70s, when she dressed the Sex Pistols and helped ignite a cultural revolution. It’s on until October, so there’s time to marvel at how chaos can be cut, stitched, and safety-pinned into style.
