September in Lisbon is when the city exhales. The tourists shuffle home, kids are herded back to school, and office workers reclaim their desks after August’s grand holiday exodus. But if you think things quiet down, think again — Lisbon in September is as hot to go as ever.
Horror devotees get baptized in blood at MOTELX, opera obsessives get their forbidden-love fix at Operafest, and the Festa do Avante! blasts fascism with a full symphonic nazi sucker-punch. There’s immersive theater at The Wish Hotel, open-air cinema on rooftops and in gardens, and a photo exhibition that peels back the layers of Lisbon’s stranger histories. In short: pack away the passports, but keep your walking shoes on — September is when the city shines, and you won’t want to miss it.
to Sept 15 | OPERA FEST | Various Performances and times | €20 – 50
Operafest 2025 is back for its sixth round, and this year it’s all about that crazy little thing called love. Expect operas riddled with forbidden romance, inconvenient illnesses, class wars, duty, betrayal, and all the juicy drama that keeps therapists in business. The fest is steered by soprano Catarina Molder and the Ópera do Castelo crew, and this time, Lisbon gets bragging rights to the national premiere of Julie by Belgian composer Philippe Boesmans (Culturgest, Sept. 5–6). Also on tap: Cine-Opera screenings at Cinemateca Portuguesa (Sept. 3, 4, 8, 9), plus a few conferences at El Corte Inglés’ Âmbito Cultural (Sept. 15–16). Check out the full program here.
to Sept 28 | ROOFTOP FILM SERIES | Capitólio | 21h | €14
This film series is dense with, arguably, some of the finest films ever made. And it’s happening on the rooftop of an iconic Art Deco theater in the famed Parque Mayer. From The Shining (Sept. 4) and Full Metal Jacket (Sept. 10) to Heat (Sept. 17) and Pulp Fiction (Sept. 26), you can expect a good crowd of thrill-seeking filmgoers. For those more interested in family-friendly entertainment, they’re playing Grease on the 11th and Mama Mia on the 24th. The ticket office opens one hour before showtime, or you can get advance tickets here, where you can also further investigate the lineup.
to Sept 30 | PHOTO EXHIBIT | Chronicles of an Unknown Lisbon | 10h – 18h | €3
“Crónicas de uma Lisboa Desconhecidam” at the Museum of Lisbon is basically a backstage pass to the city you don’t see on postcards. Nearly 100 works, many dusted off and restored just for this show, map out Lisbon’s shadow history: an Italian daredevil in an “aeronautical feat” at Terreiro do Paço in 1794, the first illegal neighborhood, the first Feira Popular, and, naturally, Amália holding court by Campo das Cebolas. From forgotten streets to funfairs, this is Lisbon in all its weird, unruly, and glorious otherness. On at Pimenta Palace, Campo Grande. The museum is closed on Mondays. Read more here and get a taste of what’s to come here.
Sept 1 and 2 | OPEN AIR CINEMA | Jardim Estrela | 21h | FREE
Cinelapa turns 20 this year, and to celebrate, the Estrela Junta is setting up its free outdoor kid-friendly film screenings in Jardim da Estrela, inlcuding Minecraft on 1st and Fantastic Four: First Steps on the 2nd. When this film series was inaugurated, as the organizers have reminded us, there were no TikToks, selfies, or air fryers — hell, we were still buying DVDs from catalogs and sending postcards via snail mail (which we should still be doing, IMO). The world may have changed, but Cinelapa hasn’t. Long live movie nights under the Lisbon sky. Click here for more information.
Sept 5 | OPEN-AIR ORCHESTRAL PERFORMANCE | Palco 25 de Abril | Atalaia | 34€+
The Festa da Avante! opens its 25 de Abril Stage by reminding us that music can do more than fill a hall — it can punch Nazis in the face. Marking 80 years since the end of WWII, the Lisbon Sinfonietta Orchestra will resurrect works once banned as “degenerate,” honor resistance fighters, and give voice to pieces written in concentration camps. Expect everything from Weinberg and Eisler to the haunting Lili Marleen, plus tributes to Theresienstadt prisoners and Dachau’s victims. The program closes with Mahmoud Abuwarda’s ode to Gaza and Prokofiev’s triumphant “Symphony No. 5” — proof that even in the darkest times, art insists on survival. Nazis tried to silence this music, but instead, it’s playing louder than ever. Definitely worth the trip to Atalaia. Sept 9 – 15 | MOTELX HORROR MOVIE FESTIVAL | Cinéma São Jorge | TBA
September in Lisbon means one thing: horror season. While the full program still hasn’t been announced, MOTELX kicks off Sept. 9 with The Long Walk — a dystopian blood march based on a Stephen King novel, and closes on Sept. 14 with James DeMonaco’s (The Purge) nursing home nightmare The Home, starring Pete Davidson, because apparently clowns aren’t scary enough. Legendary producer Gale Anne Hurd (Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss) takes Guest of Honour, bringing with her screenings of Aliens: Director’s Cut and Tremors, plus a masterclass with horror film historian Heidi Honeycutt. New blood includes Tina Romero (Queens of the Dead, a drag-zombie apocalypse), Julie Pacino (I Live Here Now, a psychological spiral), and Quentin Dupieux (The Piano Accident, skewering social media with an absurd bite). The monsters are coming, and they’ve saved you a front-row seat. Get more details here.
Sept 12 – 14 | IMMERSIVE THEATER | The Wish Hotel | Various Showtimes | €22,50
The Wish Hotel opens its doors this September, but don’t expect turndown service and complimentary mints. This immersive, site-specific theatre piece trades in movement, mood, and the uncomfortable truth that every desire comes with a bill. Directed by Vicky Heath, with performers from Lisbon and the UK, the show drags you into its charged little world of choices, sacrifices, and longings. Intimate, physical, and not the kind of hotel you’ll find on Booking.com. Limited tickets, so check in here while you still can.
Sept 28 | FLEA MARKET | Feira da Bagaceira | Benfica | 10h – 17h | FREE
On the last Sunday of each month, this literal “trunk show” is where Lisbon’s second-hand spirit thrives — a bargain bazaar of vintage, antiques, and oddities that haven’t been strip-mined by tourists or marked up by ladrões. Sellers park their cars, pop their boots, and transform spring-cleaning into sweet street commerce. Shoppers browse everything from retro lamps to recycled treasures, leather-bound books to random LPs. And when the day is done, vendors just slam the trunk shut and drive off — no fuss, no frills, just business. Register to become a vendor here, and check out some examples of what’s on sale here.
