Portugal begins construction of high-speed rail line linking Lisbon and Porto | Euronews

“Once completed, the line will enable passengers to travel between the two cities in 1 hour and 15 minutes.” euronews writes.

The publication didn’t say when it would be completed, but did add this:

“The government says the project will help set up a roughly three-hour journey between Lisbon and Madrid by 2034.”

Lisbon has not had a connection to Madrid since the Covid pandemic. The connection before then took more than eight hours by train because the train first went all the way north to San Sebastian before coming down south to Madrid.

The two capitals are a rarity in Europe to lack a functional rail connection between each other.

Madrid also lacks a direct link to Paris, meanwhile.
